Summer on Broadway - Live Music Review

Providing the real jewel in the ‘Summer on Broadway’ crown, Queen tribute band Kings of Queen (www.kingsofqueen.com) proved to be a diamond choice.

With Eddy Spence as much neglected Queen keyboard player, Spike Edney, Paul Wilson as guitarist Brian May, Dave Clements as bassist John Deacon, Anthony Sargeant as drummer Roger Taylor and Dave Kinghorn as Freddie Mercury, the Kings rattled off most of the 70s rock band’s top hits with dazzling dexterity and panache.

Kicking off with ‘One Vision’, the band gave us their own particular interpretation of the regal bible that is the Queen songbook with a number of clever twists, turns and medleys including ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Don’t stop me now’ and ‘Radio Gaga’.

Closing the set with ‘Crazy little thing called love’, there was just no way the audience were going to leave without an encore. The Kings duly delivered with a medley of further classics including ‘We will rock you’, ‘Friends will be friends’ and ‘We are the champions’, the perfect end to the perfect day.

12 months on from re-opening, Letchworth’s magnificent new Broadway Gardens are the perfect place for future festivals of live music in the Garden City!
